Data residency in Saudi Arabia: a practical checklist

By Sara Al-Otaibi·2 February 2026·7 min read

PDPL, cloud regions and government guidance can feel daunting. Here is the short list we run for every KSA platform we build.

Data residency is one of the first questions on any serious KSA project, and getting it wrong is expensive. The good news: the path is clearer than it looks.

Start by classifying your data. Not everything is sensitive, and over-restricting raises cost and slows you down. Map each data type to its required handling before you choose infrastructure.

Choose a region strategy that fits. Local cloud regions and in-Kingdom providers have matured, and a hybrid approach often balances compliance with capability. Document the decision and the residency boundary explicitly.

Finally, bake compliance into the pipeline: PDPL controls as code, audit logging on by default, and access reviews on a schedule. Compliance you can prove beats compliance you assert.
